Kempton Park

The fact that Sandown was an immediate success was noticed by businessman S.H. Hyde, who owned Kempton Manor near Sunbury. The grounds had the same features as Sandown – proximity to a railway station and relatively flat land. Hyde laid out a racecourse and opened it in July 1878. It has been open ever since, with the most famous race being the King George VI Chase held every Boxing Day. The legendary racehorse Desert Orchid won the race on no fewer than four occasions. In 2006, Kempton Park was given a new all-weather Polytrack synthetic surface and floodlighting to facilitate racing in all conditions and at all light levels.
